Mrs. Lori Baris is a beloved longtime third-grade teacher at University School. She dedicated eighteen years to the lower-school campus and continues to return regularly as a substitute. Mrs. Baris grew up in Cleveland during the 1950s and '60s, attending Cleveland Heights High and coming from a family with four generations of Ohio State Buckeyes. She was profoundly influenced by a fourth-grade teacher who supported her after her mother's passing, an experience that shaped her understanding of a teacher's role.
Mr. Peter Sweeney is an upper school math and computer science teacher at University School, where he also serves as the Klein Chairholder in Computer Science and Robotics Advisor. He joined the US faculty in 2014, bringing a wealth of experience from both the tech industry and education. Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Sweeney worked in the computer industry for over ten years, having taught himself to code on an Apple IIe at age 12. He holds a Master of Arts degree from Cleveland State University and founded the US Robotics Team, which earned a berth in the state tournament in its first year.
Deacon Nelson is a prominent student-athlete at University School, serving as a McKinley House prefect and baseball captain. As an incoming senior in the class of 2026, he is committed to play baseball at Auburn University, where he is projected as a shortstop and outfielder. Nelson, who hails from Twinsburg, Ohio, previously committed to Virginia in 2022 before decommitting due to a coaching change. He has helped his high school team reach the Division III state championship game and maintains a 3.82 GPA.
Ms. Kimberly Konrad is a Lead Teacher for Kindergarten at University School, having been appointed in 2024. She is a longtime elementary educator and a recent addition to the Lower School community. Ms. Konrad earned her Bachelor of Arts from Cleveland State University and a Master of Arts from Ashland University. She was inspired to become a teacher in first grade by her own teacher, Miss Pat Canone, and previously taught in Euclid.
Mr. Keith Kneisel serves as a Middle School Math Teacher at University School, where he was appointed in 2023. He is also involved in the athletics program as a Head Coach for Middle School Maroon Soccer and an Assistant Coach for 'A' Soccer. Mr. Kneisel holds a Master of Arts from Kent State University and a Bachelor of Science from Northern Michigan. He is known among students for his unique 'Mountain Dew Stack' in his classroom, which has grown to 163 cans.
Dr. Sarah Laux is the Science Chairperson, a Science Teacher, and the Outdoor Projects Advisor at University School, having joined the faculty in 2009. She guides students in real-world scientific inquiry and emphasizes experiential learning. Dr. Laux holds a Ph.D. from Cleveland State University, an M.S. from the University of North Dakota, and a B.S. from Ohio State University. Her work often involves utilizing the school's 220-acre campus, including its forest and lake, for hands-on research and outdoor learning experiences.
Mrs. Melissa Hamburg serves as the Middle School English Department Chair and an Eighth Grade English/Social Studies Teacher at University School. She was appointed to the school in 2021. Mrs. Hamburg earned her B.S.Ed. in Secondary English Education from the University of Georgia and her M.S.Ed in Literacy and Learning from Walden University. Before joining University School, she taught English to students in grades eight through twelve in both private and public schools across Georgia and Cleveland for 17 years.
Dr. Doug Smith is a renowned wildlife biologist, widely recognized as the longtime project leader for the Yellowstone Wolf Project. He is an alumnus of University School, graduating with the Class of 1979, having started his education there in sixth grade. Growing up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, his childhood was deeply influenced by the outdoors at his family's Red Raider Camp in Russell Township, founded by his father, Ralston "Fox" Smith. Dr. Smith led the ambitious reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park in the 1990s, a conservation effort that significantly reshaped the park's ecosystem.
Tommy Nook is a University School Class of 2017 alum and the founder of Half Hitch Pretzels. He was a two-time captain for the Boston University men's lacrosse team, where he started at midfield and overcame two season-ending injuries during his collegiate career. Nook is also known as a Project 25 marathoner, having completed 25 marathons in a single year. His entrepreneurial journey began after a marathon, when he was inspired to create a "clean pretzel" alternative, leading to the establishment of Half Hitch Pretzels.
Mrs. Ashley Worthington serves as an English teacher at University School, where she is also the Head of McCarraher House, an Anderson Scholars in Humanities Advisor, and a Writing Forum Advisor. She joined the University School faculty in 2022. Mrs. Worthington earned her Bachelor of Arts from The Ohio State University and a Master of Arts in English, specializing in Renaissance literature, from John Carroll University in 2022. She was recognized with the 2023 Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools Excellence in Teaching Award for her work, which included serving as a Writing Consultant and teaching academic writing at John Carroll University.
Coach Michael Perrino serves as University School's head varsity lacrosse coach and an assistant to the athletic department. He was appointed to his role at University School in 2025. A native of Solon, Ohio, Coach Perrino played Division I lacrosse at Canisius College and professionally for the Ohio Machine, winning a Major League Lacrosse Championship in 2017. His extensive coaching career includes positions at Robert Morris University, Baldwin Wallace University, St. John Fisher University, Ohio Wesleyan University, and John Carroll University.
Danny Sullivan is a senior diver at University School in Cleveland, Ohio, and an Anderson House prefect. He is a key member of the school's swimming and diving team, which has achieved five consecutive Division II State Championships. Sullivan placed 9th in diving at the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 state championships, and 16th in 2023-2024. He is also a golfer, skier, and musician, and plans to attend Middlebury College, where he may study economics and environmental studies.
Adonis Wazni is a senior at University School, recognized for his leadership and academic excellence. He serves as the captain of the Public Forum debate team and is the president of the Student Investment Committee. A 'lifer' at University School, Adonis has attended the institution since kindergarten and is a member of the Class of 2026. He is an accomplished science researcher, having earned a Third Place award at the Ohio Environmental Education Fund State Science Day for his biomimicry project on reducing noise pollution and wakes from ship hulls. Adonis was also a Grand Prize Winner at the 2025 Northeastern Ohio Science & Engineering Fair (NEOSEF) and a finalist at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Additionally, he is a National Merit Finalist and a Cum Laude Society inductee, named Phi Beta Kappa of the Class of 2026.
David Russ Nobles is a junior at University School, known as a rapper, track athlete, and the winner of the Sherman Prize Speaking Contest. He won the 122nd Annual Sherman Prize in 2026 for his rap, "Afraid to Follow Dreams," which explored overcoming his fear of pursuing his dream of becoming a rapper. Nobles has been connected to University School since shadowing in the fourth grade and is a member of the Class of 2027. He advocates for rap as an art form for storytelling and social justice, aiming to inspire other students to embrace their authentic selves.
Mr. Robert Sherman is an international correspondent for NewsNation, whose reporting has taken him across the globe, including extensive coverage of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. He is also the bestselling author of "Lessons from the Front: A Young Reporter's Journey Through the World's Most Dangerous Places." A "lifer" at University School, he is an alumnus from the Class of 2014 and helped start the school's television network for broadcasting sporting events. Prior to joining NewsNation, Sherman worked for Fox News Channel as a multimedia reporter and for WIAT (CBS 42) in Birmingham, Alabama. He garnered international attention for asking a viral question to the newly elected Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.
Mr. Jeff Pierce serves as University School's Jr. K - 8 enrichment specialist, middle school speech and debate coach, and history specialist. He was appointed to University School in 2018. Mr. Pierce grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from Harvard University in 2004. Before joining University School, he spent 14 years teaching in international education in Hong Kong. He also holds a Master of Arts from Michigan State University.
Colin Milbourn is a senior at University School, known for his athleticism as a two-sport athlete in both football and basketball. He transferred to University School, seeking a greater challenge in his high school career. Milbourn was previously on the football and baseball rosters at Hawken High School, before joining University School's Class of 2026. He is a key member of the University School varsity basketball team.
Kingston Oliver is a senior at University School, where he balances his talents as a varsity basketball player and a cellist. He transitioned to University School from Shaker Heights, experiencing a culture shock initially. Oliver quickly found his footing through sports and the school community. Mr. Terry Lipford, a University School alum from the Class of 1998, currently serves as a middle school math teacher, basketball coach, and Director of the REACH Program. He was appointed to the University School faculty in 2007, having grown up on Cleveland's east side in a family of educators. Mr. Lipford earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from John Carroll University, initially pursuing a career in the corporate world before transitioning to education. He is known for coordinating the REACH Program, a rigorous summer enrichment program for academically talented African American middle school boys, and received the 2017 Luminary Award for his impactful community contributions.
Mr. Russell Breuer is the founder and CEO of Spot & Tango, a pet wellness company known for its fresh and personalized dog food. He is an alumnus of University School, graduating in the Class of 1998, where he was editor-in-chief of The Mabian and participated in soccer and tennis. After earning his degree from Emory University, he embarked on a career in management consulting and private equity, which included eight years working in London. Mr. Tony Peebles is a veteran banker and finance leader who serves as the Alumni Engagement Director at Baldwin Wallace University and a board member at University School. He is an alumnus of University School, graduating in the Class of 1981. Peebles grew up in Cleveland's Lee-Harvard neighborhood, the son of two educators, and attended Duke University. He spent decades in financial services, including a 24-year tenure at Fifth Third Bank, where he earned his MBA while working full-time.
Mr. Harmon, also known as Terrence J. Harmon, is the Kilroy Chairholder in Natural Science and Environmental Studies and the Outdoor Projects Advisor at University School. He is widely recognized as a legendary science and outdoor education teacher. He began his career at University School in the fall of 1970, when the Hunting Valley Upper School campus first opened. He was initially hired to teach biology and develop an outdoor program utilizing the campus's natural resources. Mr. Harmon is credited with establishing the popular maple sugaring and trout hatchery programs, which have engaged students for over 30 years. He has also guided students in building replicas of authentic birch bark canoes, connecting them to natural history and science. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Biology and Environmental Sciences from The University of Michigan and was a recipient of the Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award in 2002.
Mr. Terry Harmon is the Kilroy Chairholder in Natural Science and Environmental Studies and the Outdoor Projects Advisor at University School. He joined the school in 1970, where he was instrumental in developing the outdoor program and establishing the trout hatchery and maple sugaring operations. Mr. Harmon earned his B.S. and M.S. in Biology and Environmental Sciences from The University of Michigan. In 2002, he was recognized with the Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award for his contributions to outdoor biology education.
Mr. Dan Swander is a veteran consumer products executive and the co-founder of both Swander Pace & Company, a strategy consulting firm, and Swander Pace Capital, a private equity firm specializing in consumer products companies. He is an alumnus of University School, graduating in the Class of 1961, and is described as a "University School lifer" who grew up near the Shaker Campus. Mr. Swander earned his undergraduate degree in economics with honors from Trinity College and studied marketing at Wharton, later serving as a Principal at McKinsey & Company and holding executive positions at several food companies. He is also deeply involved in community service, currently serving as the Board President for the Winter Nights Family Shelter and as the Chair of the Finance Committee for St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Orinda, California.
Carter Loeser is a senior football linebacker, Jarvis Scholar, and student entrepreneur at University School in Cleveland, Ohio. He arrived at US as a freshman and is known for founding "Good For You Smoothies and Not So Good For You Milkshakes," an Anderson Scholars business that became a school staple. Loeser is a recipient of the Jarvis Scholarship, a four-year, fully funded scholarship awarded to incoming freshmen who excel academically and demonstrate strong investment in the school community. He also coached JV basketball after a sophomore-year ACL injury and has been involved in theater. His business was featured in Cleveland Magazine, and he plans to pursue business, economics, and finance in college.
Bill Conway is a renowned Cleveland entrepreneur, community activist, and philanthropist, best known as the founder and chairman emeritus of Fairmount Minerals, an industrial sand powerhouse. A proud alumnus of University School, Class of 1945, he has maintained a deep connection to the institution, even establishing The Conway Chair in Social Studies. Born in Cleveland in 1927 as the seventh of thirteen children, he captained the Yale football team before embarking on a career in mining that took him to Australia. Mr. Conway's entrepreneurial spirit led him to purchase Best Sand in 1978, which evolved into Fairmount Minerals, and he later founded the acclaimed Sand Ridge Golf Club.
Z Cimoroni is a senior at University School, recognized for his accomplishments as a hockey and lacrosse player, an award-winning percussionist, and a Sherman Price Speaking Contest finalist. He joined the University School community in seventh grade, having grown up in Shaker Heights. As a percussionist, Zach Cimoroni '26 received an award for his performance with the All-State Jazz Band and in the All-State Choir at the OMEA State Conference. He also earned an Honorable Mention in the 121st Annual Sherman Prize Speaking Contest for his speech, "The Demons in Our Pockets," and participates in the Anderson Scholars in Entrepreneurship program.
Will Allen is a senior at University School, where he is the head varsity debate captain and a prominent member of the baseball team. He transferred to University School in eighth grade from Chagrin Falls, having started his debate career in seventh grade at Chagrin Schools. Allen was part of the US baseball team that made a historic run to the state finals in 2025, and he also serves as treasurer on the Student Investment Committee. He plans to pursue an economics track in college, with a potential focus on finance or data.
Ben Malbasa is the head varsity football coach and an English teacher at University School in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a proud alumnus of University School, graduating in 1996, and returned to teach English and coach football in 2015. In 2025, Chase earned a national Silver Medal in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for his photography. He is also the founder of the Backstage Pass Project, a Cleveland-based nonprofit that provides instruments, lessons, and music therapy access to children.
Mr. Bo Montanye serves as the Middle School Science Department Chair and a science teacher at University School, where he was appointed in 2016. He also leads the House system at the Shaker Campus and coaches middle school soccer. Mr. Montanye earned his Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University, where he double majored in Geology and Classical Studies, and later received his Master of Science from the University of Akron. A self-described "weird kid who wanted to know everything," he is a fan of Pokémon and dreams of visiting every active lava lake on Earth.
Joe Brown, a University School alumnus from the Class of 1985, is a lifelong flyer and a prominent figure in the aviation industry. He served as the president and chairman of Hartzell Propeller and was also the chief operating officer of Tailwind Technologies, Inc., a holding company that owned several aviation manufacturing businesses. Brown is a co-founder of The Yellow House Community, a residential program in Middlebury, Vermont, for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is also a pilot and a past chairman of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association.
Griff Koch is a Sanders House prefect, varsity football captain, and a Columbia Football commit. He is a "lifer" at University School, having attended since kindergarten and is a member of the Class of 2026. Koch is committed to play football at Columbia University, where he is expected to join the offensive line. Anthony Doerr is an acclaimed American author, widely recognized for his novels and short stories. His 2014 novel, All the Light We Cannot See, became a New York Times bestseller and earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2015. A University School Class of 1991 alum, Doerr grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and his mother later taught at the school. He majored in history at Bowdoin College, graduating in 1995, and subsequently earned an MFA from Bowling Green State University. Mrs. Ullery serves as the Assistant Director of College Counseling, Sophomore Class Dean, and Archivist at University School. She joined the school in 2004, having previously held roles as Director of IT and longtime librarian. Mrs. Ullery earned her B.S. from Miami University, where she majored in Spanish and studied abroad in Mexico, and later received her M.Ed. from Kent State University. Her career includes teaching in Wichita and Cleveland Heights before her arrival at University School, where she also helped lead the school's COVID-19 pivot as Director of IT.
Jordan Barham is a professional basketball player. He is a 2012 alumnus of University School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he became the school's all-time leading scorer. Barham played college basketball at Davidson College, where he was a four-year letterwinner. His global professional career has included playing in countries such as France, the Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, and Luxembourg.
Mr. Patrick Gallagher serves as the Head of School at University School in Cleveland, Ohio. He joined University School in 2005, initially as an Upper School English teacher, and later held roles as a college counselor and Upper School Dean of Faculty. Mr. Gallagher was named Head of School in 2018, having previously served as interim headmaster. Fletcher Rollinson is a University School senior, a world record holder, and a cancer survivor known for his commitment to kindness and giving back. He joined University School in ninth grade and has been actively involved, including leading a blood drive and serving as co-president of the Future Healthcare Professionals Club. He was also inducted into the Cum Laude Society. At age 11, Fletcher was diagnosed with a rare cancerous brain tumor and underwent extensive treatment, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He plans to pursue a future in medicine, studying biology on the pre-med track at Tufts University, and remains dedicated to supporting the St. Jude community.
Toussaint Miller is a Harvard University graduate, musician, and civic leader, known for his interdisciplinary work in music, neuroscience, and community engagement. A proud Class of 2021 alum of University School, he was a head prefect and played trumpet in the school's jazz band. He concentrated jointly in music and neuroscience at Harvard, where he explored the effects of music on Alzheimer's patients and developed a research project on music therapy for cognitive impairments. Miller is slated to pursue a master's degree in the history of science and medicine at Oxford University and has been appointed the youngest member of The Cleveland Orchestra's Community Engagement Committee.
Mrs. Fornaro serves as the Upper School Receptionist at University School, a role she was appointed to in 2021. She is widely recognized for her warm and welcoming demeanor, making her a beloved figure within the school community. Mrs. Fornaro grew up in Mayfield Village and previously pursued a career in floral design. She attended St. Francis for grade school and later Notre Dame for high school, during which time it was an all-girls institution.
Dr. Tyler Yoder serves as an Upper School History Teacher and Middle School Basketball Coach at University School. He joined the University School faculty in 2021, contributing his knowledge of history and experience in athletics to the school community. Dr. Yoder holds a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, an M.A. from Trinity International University, and a B.A. from Cedarville University. He is also a published scholar whose research encompasses biblical studies and ancient languages, including work on cuneiform tablets.
Mr. Perry is a distinguished math and law teacher and the Head Swimming & Diving Coach at University School. An alumnus from the Class of 1989, he was appointed Varsity Swimming & Diving Coach in 2000 and joined the faculty in 1999. He has led the US swim team to an impressive eleven OHSAA State Championships since 2009 and has been recognized multiple times as Coach of the Year. Mr. Perry holds a JD from Indiana University and a master of arts in education from Ursuline College, and he previously practiced civil litigation. His family boasts a five-generation legacy at University School, and he also directed an a cappella group in college.
Brad Perry is a senior at University School, serving as a captain for the swim team and a standout in theater technology. As a "full lifer," he has attended University School since kindergarten, marking his thirteenth year. Brad has contributed to multiple state championship relay teams, including first-place finishes. He is passionate about theater lighting design and plans to pursue a college major in theater with an emphasis on design and production.
Mr. Bill Oberndorf is a distinguished philanthropist, visionary investor, and co-founder of SPO Partners. He is a proud 1971 alumnus of University School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he also serves as a director. Mr. Oberndorf is widely recognized for his significant contributions to education reform, including co-founding the American Federation for Children alongside John Walton. His career in finance was notably influenced by a pivotal lunch with Warren Buffett, which set him on the path to value investing. He and his wife, Susan, are also co-presidents of the Oberndorf Foundation, focusing on K-12 education, mental health, and environmental initiatives.

Mr. Rob Markey is a distinguished partner at Bain & Company, a renowned author, speaker, and podcast host, widely recognized as the co-creator of the Net Promoter System (NPS). He is an alumnus of University School, graduating in the class of 1982, and spent 12 years as a student there, starting in first grade. Mr. Markey earned his B.A. from Brown University in 1986 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1990. He is the co-author of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, "The Ultimate Question 2.0: How Net Promoter Companies Thrive in a Customer-Driven World," and hosts the "Customer Confidential" podcast.
Hugh Kopittke is a senior at University School, serving as a Goodwillie Prefect and Track Captain. He is a member of the Class of 2025 and is committed to Emory University for track and field. Hugh joined University School in his freshman year, following in his father's footsteps as a "Prepper." He was part of the 4x100-meter relay team that broke a school record and has also been involved in the school's theater program.
Lee Kravitz is a distinguished author and veteran journalist, known for his work as the former editor-in-chief of Parade magazine and an editorial director at Scholastic Inc. He is a proud alumnus of University School in Cleveland, Ohio, graduating with the class of 1971. Kravitz is an honors graduate of Yale University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, having begun his career as a freelance writer and photojournalist. Grant Brugger is an eighth-grade student at University School's Shaker Campus. He joined the school at the start of his eighth-grade year. Mr. Greg Malkin is a prominent entrepreneur and educator, best known as the founder of the Young Entrepreneur Institute (YEI) at University School in 2006. He was a former business teacher at University School, where he initiated YEI to provide K-12 students with entrepreneurial skills and mindset. Prior to his work in education, Mr. Malkin founded Technical Software, Inc., a computer software and services company based in Cleveland, which he grew to over 300 employees. He was recognized as a finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Northeast Ohio Competition in both 1994 for Technical Software and in 2016 for his work with YEI.
Chris Rose is a nationally recognized American sportscaster, currently serving as an NFL Network anchor, baseball commentator, and podcast host for Jomboy Media. He is also the preseason television play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Browns and a commentator for the Discovery Channel series *BattleBots*. A proud Cleveland native, Rose is an alumnus of University School, graduating with the class of 1989. He attended Miami University, graduating in 1993, and is a lifelong fan of Cleveland's major sports franchises. Rose has covered more than 19 Super Bowls and 15 World Series throughout his extensive career.
Dr. Foulds is a respected history teacher, Mock Trial advisor, and the Head of Sanders House at University School. He joined the University School community in 2016 and also holds the Reid Chair in History. Before coming to University School, Dr. Foulds earned his Ph.D. in History from Ohio State University in 2012, with a dissertation focusing on Methodists, secession, and the Civil War in Western Virginia. He previously taught at Ohio State University and held a tenure-track position at Shepherd University for three years.
Tyler Ziroe is a senior at University School, a committed hockey player, and an aspiring meteorologist. He is a "lifer" at University School, having attended since kindergarten, and delivers weekly school-wide weather updates using the school's green-screen room. Tyler has played hockey since age four, learning valuable lessons in work ethic from his coaches. His passion for meteorology was sparked by a unique elective at US, leading him to shadow Channel 5’s Trent McGill and make early-morning studio visits.
Will Pich is a senior at University School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he is a speech co-captain and a varsity soccer player. He joined University School in seventh grade, having previously lived in Cambodia, an experience that significantly shaped his identity. Will plans to attend Princeton University to study architecture and engineering, a passion he also pursues as the head of University School's Architecture Club. Cooper Mlakar is a University School Class of 2023 alumnus and a current student at the University of Colorado Boulder. Cris Shemo is a senior football captain at University School in Cleveland, Ohio. He joined University School in the sixth grade and has since become a notable student leader. Shemo was a senior captain for the University School football team, which made the OHSAA Playoffs in Division 3. Mr. Marcia is a Middle School Social Studies Teacher at University School. Mr. Marcia earned a Master of Education degree from Antioch New England Graduate School and a Bachelor of Arts from Wittenberg University. He is known for fostering creativity in students, notably through the popular Greek God theme where fifth graders dress up.
Mrs. Beros is the Associate Head of School at University School, a role she has held since joining the faculty in 2011. She previously served as the Director of College Counseling, where she developed new initiatives such as the College Counseling Boot Camp. Her extensive career in education spans over 25 years, including teaching history and life skills at Laurel School. Mrs. Beros earned her B.S. in Education from Miami University and holds master's degrees from American University and Ursuline College. She is also a proud parent of a University School alumnus, Michael, Class of 2021.
Coach Kennedy, also known as Coach K, serves as the football defensive coordinator, head track coach, and freshman basketball coach at University School. He joined the US faculty in 2015, also holding positions as assistant head football coach and Athletics Facilities & Equipment Manager at the upper school. Coach Kennedy was named Varsity Track and Field coach in 2020, following five years as an assistant coach for the team. A 14-year coaching veteran, he previously coached at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin and Ledgemont High School, and played state-championship football at Benedictine.
Mr. McCarter is a Middle School Social Studies Teacher for eighth grade at University School's Shaker Campus. He was appointed to the school in 2021 and also serves as the Eighth Grade Dean. Mr. McCarter coaches Middle School Wrestling and holds a B.A. from The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He has shared his journey of teaching in other countries before coming to University School.
Jack Levy is the eighth-grade class president at University School. He is a student at the Shaker Campus and is preparing to transition to the high school next year. Jack has reflected on his experiences growing up at University School and his journey as a student leader. He has observed different class sizes throughout his time at US, including 16 students in fourth grade and 8 students in fifth and sixth grades.
Kam Shiver is a senior at University School in Hunting Valley, Ohio, known for his leadership and athletic achievements. He is a member of the Class of 2025 and has been a varsity athlete in both football and lacrosse since his freshman year. Shiver won the 120th Annual Sherman Prize Speaking Contest on February 15, 2024, for his speech titled 'Thank You, Mom.' He has committed to playing lacrosse at DePauw University.
Mr. James Lewis is a distinguished alumnus of University School, graduating with the Class of 2000, and has been a dedicated faculty member since 2010. He currently serves as the head coach of the Upper School Speech and Debate Team and teaches history. Mr. Lewis holds a B.A. in history from Kenyon College and an M.A. in history from Pennsylvania State University. In January 2024, he was recognized for his contributions by being awarded The F. Washington “Tony” Jarvis Chair in Religion & Ethics.
Marc Byrnes is a distinguished business leader and philanthropist, known for his extensive career in the insurance sector and his significant civic engagement in Northeast Ohio. He is an alumnus of University School, Class of 1972, and received the school's Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award in 2012. Byrnes previously served as Chairman and CEO of Oswald Companies, a prominent independent insurance brokerage firm. He is also recognized for his deep commitment to philanthropy, notably with the United Way of Greater Cleveland, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
